Overview
The Birth of Culture.
Sophia is the Greek word for wisdom and is symbolically represented in this work by the figure of a young woman emerging from the harmonious flow of the spiral movement of books. The virtue of wisdom is born through the practice of accumulating knowledge, achieved by grounding oneself in the search for the value of reason, learning from multiple disciplinary sources: philosophy, history, mathematics, science, technology, literature, and the arts. It is this achievement that leads us to become cultured and civilized citizens. This work represents that fluid transformation and is a tribute to the pursuit of wisdom and the reward of that achievement: the ecstasy of the wise. This sculpture is made of marmolina, fiberglass, serpentine, or green marble. The full height of the monument is 2.5 meters and it is located at 8th Avenue and 10th Street in Zone 1 of Guatemala City, at the Cultural Center of Congress.
