Overview

A Celebration of leadership and the timeless defense of freedom.

The Acton Institute established the Guardian of Liberty Award to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and to honor leaders who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to defending liberty. On November 16, 2009, the first Guardian of Freedom Award was presented to Giancarlo Ibargüen S., President of Francisco Marroquín University. Walter Peter created the sculpture inspired by a favorite Giancarlo masterpiece of classical literature: "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha" by Cervantes. The bronze sculpture is mounted on a trapezoidal wooden base with dimensions of 0.6m in height, 0.70m in width, and 0.4m in depth.
